CNN REPORTS TO WATCH OUT FOR THIS COMPUTER VIRUS: PLEASE READ !!!!

A potential virus!

I checked Snopes and it is for real !! Get this message sent around to your contacts ASAP PLEASE FORWARD THIS WARNING AMONG FRIENDS, FAMILY AND CONTACTS!

You should be alert during the next few days. Do not open any message with an attachment entitled 'POSTCARD FROM HALLMARK,' regardless of who sent it to you.  It is a virus which opens A POSTCARD IMAGE, which 'burns' the whole hard disc C of your computer.

This virus will be received from someone who has your e-mail address in his/her co ntact list. This is the reason why you need to send this information to all your contacts.  It is better to receive this message 25 times than to receive the virus and open it.

If you receive a mail called' POSTCARD,' even though sent to you by a friend, do not open it!

Shut down your computer immediately.
It has been classified by Microsoft as the most destructive virus ever. This virus was discovered by McAfee yesterday, and there is no repair yet for this kind of virus. This virus simply destroys the Zero Sector of the Hard Disc, where the vital information is kept.

COPY THIS INFORMATION AND SEND IT TO YOUR FRIENDS. REMEMBER: IF YOU SEND IT TO THEM, YOU WILL BENEFIT ALL OF US.

Snopes lists all the names it could come in.

PLEASE READ, COPY & FORWARD!!!

Knowledge is power!

hi, any virus that requires somebody to mass send to friends is a hoax. I have yet seen any real virus that requires CNN to alert people. One friend sent me the same email and we all laughed when I explained to her.

Huiting,

1st thank you for you comments,

2nd thank you for pointing out that perhaps CNN did NOT report this.  I will update my blog.

3rd "KNOWLEDGE IS POWER": someone I work with recently experienced a virus and needed to buy a new laptop.  So when I saw this infomation, it was timely.  I am sure you also know of individuals who have experienced viruses. BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY.

4th (and not least in importance) I strongly believe it is professionally disrespectful to "laugh" at someone's information when they are trying to be resourceful to others.  Someone whom I respect sent me this information and I thought it was worthy enough to let others know.  Again, "KNOWLEDGE IS POWER".

Hi, Ann,

Sorry, I was not laughing at you. Not everybody is tech savvy. I just laugh at the fact that it is the identical email that I received more than 10 days ago. And we found it was a spam itself within 5 seconds.

Actually, my friend who works at a huge computer firm sent me this and I responded almost the same back to her. Maybe because we know each other so well.

Anyway, the fact is anything that needs to be mass-sent out due to virus or whatever, IS a virus itself.

best regards,

Huiting,

Ann, I went to the Snopes site and here is what they say about the Postcard Virus. It is in fact a virus that has been around a long time. The bad news is it is a virus and precautions should be taken. The good news is that according to Sniopes, it won't burn up your hard drive. However, it pays to be cautious when it comes to viruses. Thanks.

Michael,

Thank you for investigating and your post!  We learn from each other!

Yes, I agree with you : "it pays to be cautious when it comes to viruses".  A reputable agent in my area sent me an email informing me about this certain virus and I KNOW he does his homework, so I wanted others to know, as well.

Thanks, Michael, for ascertaining it!

I heard about this virus a few weeks ago. Thanks for the reminder.

Neither the Norton Symantec product nor technicians can adequately diagnose viruses or spyware.  Their main technique is ignoring the problem, inventing excuses regarding their incompetence and avoiding dealing with issues.

They spen most of their time repeating the phone number and and email address on file, and their "2 minutes" to read the case is more like 20 minutes to read 2 lines. The remaining bulk of their time is well spent on transferring calls from one so-called "technician" to the next and from technician to manager and from department to department.

They mislead you by  telling you not to use anything else but Nortons which can solve everything. When their scan fails to pick up serious problems and another does they tell you your computer was about to crash and then admit Norton's is not 100%. (When it is too late.)

So it seems that Norton's Symantec is a fine company until you actually have a real concern. The product make for an excellent toy and it's lovely to believe one has some real protection.

After "working" with the product for many years the only conclusion I can reach is it has been a complete waste of time and money ... they are more concerned about covering up then telling you when there is a serious computer threat or fixing it ... and they are unable to adequately accomplish either.
